BIBLE STUDIES FROM NLC LEADERS - MARTYN ROWE
3. Some Trust
………… Read Psalm 20
In the wonderful Christmas film starring Sir
Richard Attenborough as Kris Kringle, Miracle on 34th Street, where
they are trying to prove that Santa is real, and Kris is the actual Santa; a $1
dollar bill is presented to the judge, the words on the back encircled are “In
God We Trust”, the judge realises if the United States treasury can put its
official faith in God on its currency, then people should be allowed to believe
in Santa if they so wish!
We too have the freedom to
believe, or trust in what or whom we want. Psalm 20 explains this clearly,
stating that; “Some trust in chariots and some in horses”, when back in
the day these were a symbol of wealth, power (confidence) and security. The
question arises; where do we put our trust to find our wealth, our confidence,
our security?
Take a moment to think
about / jot down the areas of your life that supply your wealth, your
confidence, your security?
– do some of these include; job, reputation,
savings, status, abilities, friends, family, looks, fashion sense, likes on
Facebook, past achievements, etc? It goes to say that there’s not anything wrong
with any of the of the above, in fact many of them are wonderful things in our
lives.
The question is though; In
what or whom do we trust (ultimately, in the face of hardship,
uncertainty and lack), who do we trust?
The psalmist and friends
state; “but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.”
Question: What
happens to the people who trust in “horses & chariots”? (clue…. v8)
Question: What happens to the people
who trust in God’s name?
Prayer suggestion; Dear Lord Jesus, help me to trust in you, your provision in
my life and not give way to fear or worry, Amen
Further study: David
prays “May he” (the Lord) many times …. How do you apply these to yourself and
others/?
What
promises are included in this Psalm?
Lots of love, Martyn Rowe 😊
